Monkeyscenes (2 convolutes)
The two bundles of monkey sceneries come from the series "Trofées de chasse dessinées par C. Huet et gravées par Guélard" and "Singeries ou différentes acteurs de la vie humaine représentées par des singes". The series "Trophées de chasse" first appeared in 1741, drawn by Christophe Huet (1694/17001759), etched and edited by Jean Guélard, and consisted of six illustrations. The series was extended several times. The nine prints in the Flensburg collection come from the third edition, which comprises eleven sheets and is dedicated to "M. Delorme, 1er garçon et délivreur de la ménagerie à Versailles". From this series the title page and the dedication are missing from the present collection, as well as the sheets six, "Le lavement donné", and eleven, "Le sculpteur". The eleven- or twelve-part series "Singeries ou différentes acteurs de la vie humaine représentées par des singes" appeared in 1743. The title page and the 8th sheet "Le remouleur" are missing from the acquired collection of 11 sheets. The unnumbered sheet "Le Pourvoyeur" also belongs to the "Singeries", but was published in another volume. It does not belong to the series mentioned above as it was printed in 1743. Since the sheet in the Flensburg collection bears no number, it is probably a single print, which was added to the bundle as a replacement for a missing sheet. Since also "Le Pourvoyeur" was painted on the back by a child hand, the sheet seems to have been kept with the other sheets of the bundle already before the sale via the antiquarian bookshop Karl Schein.
