Description
The carving by an unknown artist shows a female figure, sometimes labelled as Saint Helena with a ring, sometimes as Saint Agnes or Saint Catherine. The landscape in which the artwork was created around 1480 is also undetermined.
Provenance
According to an investigation report on Hermann Göring's art collection (Göring Report), the wooden figure arrived in Germany from Switzerland in 1940. It had been acquired for the (estimated) price of 8,000 Swiss francs from the art shop Theodor Fischer in Lucerne in exchange for another work of art from Germany. This provenance is confirmed by the audit report submitted to the German authorities by the Swiss clearing centre in 1952, which had investigated the business activities of Galerie Fischer in the years 1939 to 1943. According to the Fischer art shop's inventory card and debtors' ledger, the artwork in question had previously been purchased from Fischer on 11.10.1938 for 5,000 francs. A person from Strasbourg is noted as the seller in the documents
