Ball-lifting athlete
‘The plaster model of the ‘Ball lifting Athlet’ was created in 1892 and the cast dates from before 1906.
In the 1890s, Stuck produced his main works in the field of sculpture. The very next year, the artist boasted that he had already sold over a dozen copies of the ‘Athlete Stemming a Ball’.
It is no longer possible to determine how many copies were actually cast. There is another sculpture of the athlete in federal ownership (mü 13613). Angela Heilmann's 1985 publication identified 15 bronze sculptures. In addition, six further works were identified during research on Stuck and his collection at the Villa Stuck.
