Description
A BRIGHTLY COLOURED ALBARELLO, decorated on the upper part with an orange shield bearing the monastic mark "P.A.Q." below a double cross with two winged monsters at either side, in the lower part a blackamoor's head in profile to dexter, divided by an orange label with the name of the drug in blue, DIA ? PRUNIS • s, the whole enclosed by a blue wreath with clusters of fruit, the reverse with blue ribbon scrolls, Deruta, circa 1501
Provenance
Munich, loss 1938;
The collection (approx. 440 works) was confiscated by the SS in Munich in 1938 on the occasion of the ‘Reichskristallnacht’ and auctioned at Sotheby's in London in 1939 (7/8 June and 19/20 July).
