Description
A DOCUMENTARY CAFFAGGIOLO ARMORIAL CHARGER, decorated on the raised boss in colours with the arms of Salviati and Benti-voglio within eight radiating panels of foliate motifs in orange, green, yellow and blue, the well border with trofei and foliate meander principally in blue, the everted rim similarly decorated on a larger scale and inscribed on scrolls twice repeated "semper vivat", the underside of the dish with a formal leaf border, the sunk centre inscribed "in Chafagiuollo " and bearing a mark " PS ", crossed with two paraphs, circa, 1540
Provenance
Munich, loss 1938;
The collection (approx. 440 works) was confiscated by the SS in Munich in 1938 on the occasion of the ‘Reichskristallnacht’ and auctioned at Sotheby's in London in 1939 (7/8 June and 19/20 July).
