Description
The cup combines scientific precision with humanistic erudition, as expressed in the use of the figure of Atlas. The globe cup is a double cup; when opened, both halves of the globe form drinking bowls of equal size. The base is decorated with representations of the four elements, and the handle is formed by the figure of Atlas, who holds the globe on his neck. The globe is engraved with the continents and delicate groups of animals and plants. The date 1746 is located next to a restoration site and presumably refers to this. The cup appears to be a work from the 17th or early 18th century. As Petersburg, founded in 1703, is already mentioned, it was probably created shortly afterwards. A coat of arms shows the coat of arms of Londonderry.
