Description
The picture shows a view of the "Pressa" (press exhibition) in Cologne in 1928 from the Hohenzollern Bridge. It is a night-time view of the new buildings erected for the exhibition and an impression of the city's still very modern lighting thanks to the supply of electricity.
Provenance
The Stuttgart City Gallery received the painting in 1967 as part of a donation from the son of former Federal President Theodor Heuss. The Heuss family had acquired it from the Hermann Abels art salon. When, where and how Abels acquired the painting is unknown. There is a gap in the provenance from 1928 to 1952. The art dealers Hermann and Günther Abels were involved as private individuals in the Nazi looting of cultural property.
