Description
A FINE GOLD LUSTRE DERUTA DISH, painted with a standing figure of a young soldier wearing a helmet, lion-head epaulettes and a sword at his side, in his right hand a halberd, in his left a shield with the Orsini Arms, beyond a tessellated pavement, flowers and a view of a castle and city in the distance, a border a quartieri of flowers and scale ornament [type cf. Rackham Guide, pi. 28a), the underside of the dish with a buff glaze and foot rim pierced for suspension, circa 1525
Provenance
Munich, loss 1938;
The collection (approx. 440 works) was confiscated by the SS in Munich in 1938 on the occasion of the ‘Reichskristallnacht’ and auctioned at Sotheby's in London in 1939 (7/8 June and 19/20 July).
