Description
Oval onyx set in gold as a medallion or rather amulet: Medusa-like 'Hystera' with eight serpents, with the inscription "+ΥϹΤΕΡΑ ΜΕΛΑΝΙ ΜΕΛΝΟΜΕΝΙ ΟϹ ΟΦ ΙΛΙΕ Κ ΟϹ ΔΡΑΚΟΙ ϹΥΡΙΖ Κ ΟϹΛΕΟ...+" around the circumference.
Provenance
Extant in the Kunstkammer since at least 1764, temporarily in the posession of duke August of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (cf. notes in the 1764 and 1858 inventory), probable loss after 1945, whereabouts unknown.
