Description
An old man, seen from the front, sits in a wood-paneled interior on a wooden bench; he wears a crushed tall hat and plays the violin; he is dressed in a short jacket, waistcoat and breeches; the stockings and shoes have a greenish-grey tone; an earthenware pitcher stands on the cupboard behind him; the picture is rather a speedy sketch in the style of Early Netherlandish masters than a finished work of art.
Provenance
According to the accession register, the painting was gifted in 1909 by the artist's childhood friend, Dr. Gottlob Schneider (1835-1912), Gotha. Whereabouts unknown.
