Description

Table with curved gilded frame and lacquered Chinese table top. Relief lacquer and scattered gold decoration, gold painting, gilding.

The table top shows a lacquer work with a landscape depiction. It cannot be conclusively determined whether this was an Asian work or a Saxon imitation. Comparable works, also in the furniture holdings of the Saxon court, are attributed to Martin Schnell (1675-1740).

According to the existing photo, there is a flaw in the carving below the frame.

Provenance
The furniture photographed in the Dresden Castle was state property in 1935. The photograph was taken in the “Georgenbau”, most probably in the former bedroom of Queen Carola. Both the recognizable parquet floor and the wooden panel behind it correspond to the photograph of a writing cabinet documented in this room. An exact date of removal is not on record; the measures were completed in the summer of 1944. The Rothschönberg and Zottewitz castles were possible locations for the removal. The surviving list of the goods removed by the Dresden castle administration for the Rothschönberg relocation site contains the following information: „1 Chinatisch“ und „1 gesgl. rot m. Platte“ (SKD, file archive, preliminary files no. 58, volume 2, sheet 269). According to the files, loss at the relocation site.
