Description
A FAENZA TAZZA WITH " SCANNELLATO " MOULDING, by Virgiliotio Calamelli da Faenza, decorated a berettino with a central medallion containing a full length figure of St. John in sheepskin and cloak holding a cross and gourd, typical green landscape with blue wavy hills, within radiating flutes decorated with formal foliate motifs in blue and white on a dark blue and brown ground, the underside with orange and blue feathery leaf scrolls on the moulded compartments, circa 1540
Provenance
Munich, loss 1938;
The collection (approx. 440 works) was confiscated by the SS in Munich in 1938 on the occasion of the ‘Reichskristallnacht’ and auctioned at Sotheby's in London in 1939 (7/8 June and 19/20 July).
