Description
Base for a writing cabinet with double-door top, mirror panels, lacquered red-brown, Chinese painting
Provenance
Two writing cabinets with an attachment are listed in the inventory under “Chinesisches Zimmer” in Dresden Castle. According to the settlement agreement of 1924, ownership was transferred to the Free State of Saxony. During an exhibition in 1933, the two cabinets, which were made as a pair, were displayed in the bedroom of Augustus the Strong (west wing, 2nd floor, room no. 25). The inventory list of art objects mentions “2 rote Lackschränke” in the “China-Zimmer”. In August 1943, they were transported to a relocation site (presumably Rammenau or Schieritz). An exact date of removal is not on record. One top was preserved and brought back to Dresden. Nothing is known about the circumstances of the loss of the base cabinet. It is assumed that it was lost in connection with the events of the Second World War.
